Codependency

Mary Beth Cooke psychotherapist

Research shows the the qualities that would label a person as "codependent" are prevalent in our society. These include such items as having low self-esteem, over-concern with people-pleasing, poor boundary-drawing, strong need for control, poor communication regarding authentic feelings, obsessive thoughts, and strong denial.

The painful emotions associated with this problem can include anxiety, shame, abandonment, depression, hopelessness and despair.

In therapy, when we draw family genograms (charts that identify the genealogy and mental health issues within a family) where there is addiction/dependency, we can often trace codependency right alongside it. Sometimes people are plagued with both problems. These tendencies are strong, predictable, and deep-rooted; the patterns have repeated for several generations.

If you are struggling with codependency, we will work together to identify your own thoughts and behaviors and change them so that you can get what your want out of your life and relationships
