Pregnancy

As a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, let me be an addition to your wellness team in coping with your pregnancy. Finding out that you are pregnant is usually a very emotional experience. You are delighted, terrified, or somewhere in the middle. The feelings and fears experienced during this time can be intense and varied. Pregnancy takes your mind and body through an ongoing stream of changes adding to a normal preoccupation with how your body is quickly changing, how to manage symptoms, how different your life is becoming, worry about the pregnancy going well, finances, and simply keeping up with everyday life.

Pregnancy is expected to be one of the happiest times of a woman's life, but for many women pregnancy instead becomes a time of anxiety, confusion, stress and even depression. Perhaps your pregnancy was the result of infertility intervention, and you are now carrying twins or even higher-order multiples. You need someone to talk to about your mixed feelings. Emotional distress in women during pregnancy has been shown to increase the risk of adverse outcomes for women and newborns.

It is important to receive help early on to prevent the possible need for anti-depressant medication which could have a negative effect on your unborn child. Counseling has been shown to be very effective in lessening depression and reducing the incidence of postpartum depression. I would be happy to work with you during this time.
